Milk

The milk that’s processed for Sherman Farm bottles is produced by the Hussey family from Naughtaveel Farm on Westside Road in Conway.  Justin and Julie Hussey purchased the cows from the Shermans in 2007 and continue to raise and milk them on site.

The milk is transported to Smiling Hill Farm in Westbrook ME twice per week where it is pasteurized and bottled in our glass bottles.   The milk is of excellent quality and processed in small batches to maintain its great taste.  Glass bottles are the best conveyance of a high quality beverage and you truly can taste the difference.

Bottled milk is available year round at the farm stand.  Skim, 2%, and Whole are available in half gallons, quarts and pints.  Flavors include Chocolate, Blueberry, Coffee, Strawberry, Vanilla made with whole milk and Low fat Chocolate in quart and pint bottles.  Creamline (whole milk that is not homogenized so the cream rises to the top) is available in quarts.  Heavy Cream and Half and Half round out the year round line of milk.  During the Thanksgiving and Christmas season our famous rich eggnog is available and in summer refreshing lemonade.  Other products available made with milk from the farm are fresh churned butter, Smiling Hill ice cream, probiotic yogurt and Silvery Moon artisan cheeses.

Meat

The beef raised for the stand are Angus and Angus crosses.  The animals are fed a balanced diet consisting of corn silage, haylage and cornmeal.  Our animals are not fed antibiotics or growth hormones.  They live in pens in a large airy barn where they can roam freely, have feed and water available at all times and they sleep on bed packs.  Our pigs arrive in the spring and live in large pens and enjoy a diet of waste milk from the dairy and special grain pellets.  The pigs spend time lounging and playing with their blue balls.  Visitors are welcome to see the animals, please stop in at the stand to let us know you will be visiting.

The animals are processed at the Windham Butcher Shop in Windham, ME which is a USDA inspected meat processing facility.  The beef is dry aged a process where the carcass hangs in a cooler for a minimum of 14 days which allows the flavor to develop.  The meat is then cut to our specifications and is packaged in a vacuum sealed plastic package called cryovac.  Because of the vacuum packaging no oxygen is in the package and the product keeps for a year or more without freeze drying.  This process sets our meat apart from meat at the large grocery chains where the beef is killed, cut, packaged and on a truck in the same day.  Proper aging and minimal processing makes for optimum flavor.  The pork does not need to be aged to develop flavor and therefore is normally cut within a day of slaughter.  Smoked cuts have minimal amounts of nitrites and are smoked for several weeks.

Our Animals

Beef & Pork - We take as much care raising our animals for meat as we do our milk animals.

The beef animals are Angus or Angus crosses and receive the same feeds as the milking cows, corn silage, haylage and cracked corn as needed for protein. Their diets are scientifically balanced for their needs. The pigs are fed grain pellets, cracked corn and waste milk from the farm. The pigs live in a spacious barn in pens where they can run and play with their blue balls.

When our animals are processed they are shipped to the Windham Butcher Shop in Windham ME, a USDA inspected meat processing facility. The beef is dry aged for two weeks which develops the flavor, then is cut to our specifications and is wrapped in a cryovac (vacuum sealed) plastic package. The fact that the beef is aged and minimally processed sets it apart from other beef. All our meat is sold in the stand as frozen cuts. The pork is cut within days of slaughter and some cuts are smoked and do have a minimal amount of nitrites. Bacon is so popular it sells out rapidly.
